Buying clippers, tubs, and tables that hold up under daily use
A working framework for choosing clippers, blades, tubs, and grooming tables that survive full-time shop use instead of failing under the volume.
Tima Miroshnichenko · PexelsEquipment that performs fine for a mobile groomer doing a handful of dogs a day can fail fast in a shop running eight or more grooms across multiple staff. Motors overheat, hydraulic lifts wear out, and tub drains clog under a volume of hair that a lighter-duty setup was never designed for. Buying for a full-time shop means buying past the spec sheet and thinking about duty cycle, serviceability, and what happens the day a piece of core equipment breaks mid-shift.
Clippers and blades: buy for duty cycle, not just power
Clipper motors are rated for different duty cycles, and a clipper marketed for home grooming or light professional use will run hot and burn out faster under the back-to-back grooms a full-time shop demands. Look specifically at whether a clipper is rated for continuous professional use, not just “professional grade” marketing language that doesn’t tell you the actual duty cycle. Cordless clippers have closed most of the power gap with corded models, but battery life and charging cycles still matter when you’re running a clipper through a full day without a break, so keep at least one backup battery or a backup clipper on hand rather than discovering a dead battery mid-groom.
Blade maintenance is where shops either save money or quietly lose it. A dull or poorly maintained blade drags on the coat, extends table time, and increases the risk of nicks, all of which cost you more than a proper blade rotation and sharpening schedule would. Keep enough blades in rotation that a groomer is never reaching for a dull one because the sharp ones are all out being serviced, and build blade sharpening into a recurring line item rather than an occasional afterthought.
Tubs and tables carry the physical toll of the job
Grooming is physically demanding work, and the tub and table setup in your shop has a direct effect on staff injury rates and how long groomers stay in the profession before their backs give out. Hydraulic or electric lift tables that adjust to a groomer’s height reduce the bending and reaching that wears down staff over years, and the upfront cost is easy to justify against turnover and workers’ comp risk alone. The same logic applies to raised or walk-in tubs, a groomer lifting a fifty-pound dog into a low tub dozens of times a week is absorbing physical strain that a properly sized tub eliminates.
Drainage and dryer capacity deserve equal attention. A tub or drain system undersized for the hair volume of a busy shop clogs constantly, and a dryer that can’t keep pace with a full schedule becomes the bottleneck that backs up your whole day, no matter how fast your groomers work. Size these to your actual daily volume, not to what looked adequate in a showroom demo.
Build a maintenance and backup plan before something fails
The real cost of equipment isn’t the purchase price, it’s the downtime when something breaks during a fully booked day. Keep a maintenance log for clippers, dryers, and tables, and know in advance which local supplier or service tech can turn around a repair quickly. For anything load-bearing, a table lift or a dryer motor, know whether you’re carrying a backup unit or accepting that a failure means canceling appointments. Shops that treat equipment reliability as part of their operating plan, rather than an afterthought, lose far less revenue to unplanned downtime.
